Praetorivm

Historically

Praetorivm
– originally denoted the commander’s tent, and over time also his permanent quarters in permanent camps.

Praetorivm was located in the central part of the camp, at the intersection of the two main roads: via praetoria and via principalis. This location emphasised the importance of the commander and allowed rapid access to all parts of the camp.

In the tent, or building in the case of permanent camps, resided the commander of the legion, that is the legate (legatus legionis), as well as his closest collaborators, for example military tribunes (tribuni militum) and administrative personnel. Praetorivm served both as a residential and staff space – decisions were made there, documents were stored, councils were held, and messengers were received.

Inside were, among other things, the commander’s everyday equipment, chests for documents and money, and symbolic elements associated with authority and prestige. In practice, it was the command centre of the legion, on which the functioning of the entire camp depended.

Castrvm Rapacis

In our camp, it serves as the central command tent, modelled on Roman military realities. It is located in the middle of the camp, in a symbolic place that is easily accessible to all members of the unit.

The Centvrio lives in the Praetorivm, serving as the main commander, together with the highest command – the Optio, his deputy, and the Tribvnvs. This tent is not only a place of rest for the command staff, but above all a space for work and camp management.

Legion documents are stored there, such as attendance lists, orders, and organisational records. Petitioners, that is members of the group bringing matters to the command, are also received in the Praetorivm. An important role is played by the scribe, who is responsible for maintaining documentation, preparing records, and supporting administrative work.

Praetorivm therefore serves as the organisational and decision-making centre, being the heart of the group’s camp life.

NOTE! (I forgot how to add that red rectangle) — entry to the Praetorivm without the presence of someone from the command or without their explicit consent is absolutely forbidden and punishable!
